Blue River of East Kalimantan: A Hidden Gem Near Ibu Kota Nusantara

East Kalimantan — May 11, 2022. Amid the focus on developing Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN), I chose to explore another side of East Kalimantan: its pristine natural potential, still little known to the public. This journey took me to Batu Sopang District, Paser Regency, to a destination locals call the Blue River—a natural area almost untouched by tourism.

Its location is not far from IKN’s central area, giving it great potential to be developed as a nature-based tourism destination. This choice also serves as a reminder that the beauty of Kalimantan is not only defined by its forests and mines, but also holds many remarkable places worthy of being promoted in the right way.

Journey to the Blue River

My route began from Sepaku toward Batu Sopang by motorcycle. The road was narrow, only wide enough for two-wheeled vehicles. One of the biggest challenges was crossing a suspension bridge that swayed as I passed over it—adding a thrill of adventure before reaching the main destination.

Together with my nephew, Deni Iriansyah, we followed the river upstream to its source. The Blue River’s water appeared clear with a greenish hue, contrasting with the large rivers of Kalimantan, which are generally murky due to sedimentation. From above, the river’s blue-green color was clearly visible, creating a captivating view.

Exploring the Headwaters and the Bat Cave

At the river’s headwaters lies a small cave with walls draped in hanging roots. Inside, a colony of bats lives alongside the gentle trickle of water. Walking along the riverbank, I slipped at one point—a reminder that this area remains completely natural, untouched by man-made facilities.

The water inside the cave retains its blue hue. The riverbed is adorned with aquatic plants and local freshwater snails known in Sundanese as tutut. The setting offered a chance to pause and enjoy nature. Deni seemed to relish his time playing in the water and swinging from tree roots, giving the impression that this place could also be an exciting destination for adventurous family outings.

Wildlife and the Role of the Locals

On the river’s surface, a whistling duck could be seen swimming leisurely. This kind of biodiversity adds a unique charm rarely found in typical tourist spots. Local villagers help maintain the area’s cleanliness and authenticity, ensuring the environment remains pristine even though it has yet to be officially managed as a tourist destination.

The journey to the Blue River reminded me that amid the massive development of IKN, preserving local natural potential must remain a priority. This documentation is not merely a travel record, but also an invitation to view East Kalimantan from a broader perspective—one where nature, communities, and development can move forward together without sacrificing one another.
